Project Overview
This project is a collaboration of multiple groups/entities. Burro is an innovative product distributor in Ghana who is organizing the whole project. Our Cal Poly team has accumulated research about the Ghanaian culture, geography, climate, etc. and obtained first-hand insight from SLO local, Abigail Opareb, who was born and raised in Ghana. Cal Poly is also in collaboration with a team at Brown university, who is developing the technology. Kyle Venell, Cal Poly undergraduate majoring in Environmental Earth Science, plans to continue with the implementation of the device for his senior project. Cal Poly’s Student Experimental Farm will serve as the testing grounds.
The Cal Poly Team
Ricky LopezI am an undergraduate student at Cal Poly studying Agricultural and Environmental Plant Science. My concentration is nursery management and greenhouse production, I also have background in sustainable plant production and crop science. Through the study of agriculture I have begun to understand the tremendous amount of work and dedication that goes into feeding our planet. Since being at Cal Poly I've had a great experience working at our on campus plant nursery and have become acquainted with plant culture, disease, pests and identification. Through this project, I hope to use these skills I have developed to help those in need.
Chelsea GlasnowI am a undergraduate at Cal Poly, pursuing a Bachelors in Food Science, with a culinary concentration. Through my travels, I have experienced different cultures and gained a vast appreciation for the diversity in our world. I also had the pleasure of working on a ranch in Santa Cruz where I became acquainted with irrigation of pumpkins, apples, and gardens. I hope to take my passion for food and sustainability to help educate less informed, developing countries; and what better way than starting with the most crucial component: Agriculture.
Ariana BrandaoEntering my senior year in the pursuit of a B.S in Anthropology and Geography, with minors in Ethnobotany and Sustainable Technologies, I am passionate about people. I have experience working with a variety of NGOs, both national and international. I am interested in how technologies can be sustainably integrated in culturally appropriate interactions. Having always had an interest in agriculture and sustenance farming, this project is inspiring due to the potential to create a design that can benefit the everyday lives of farmers.

Jim MarettI am a student studying Sociology at Cal Poly SLO, CA.
I Served six years in the United States Air Force, my job was to deploy anywhere in the world and set up communication systems for a temporary landing strip within 24 hrs, I also was on a communications maintenance team where we serviced 29 detachments throughout Alaska. I have been a licensed Design/Build General Contractor since 1988, designing and building residential and light commercial projects throughout California. Born and raised in California Eli SchulmanI am a third year Business Administration student concentrating in Financial Management. While I haven't had any experience working with a project like this, I have always been passionate about sustainability, equality, and social welfare. I first got interested in drip irrigation after attending a presentation regarding the amount of water waste caused by modern "convenient" irrigation techniques. My hope for this irrigation project is that it will provide a sustainable small scale practice for use in Ghana, but will eventually turn into a much more prevalent practice world wide.
